Castiglione della Pescaia is a municipality with 8,000 inhabitants, in the heart of the Tuscan Maremma. An ancient fishing village overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea, it was an important fortified center since the Etruscan-Roman era. The ancient Castle was built around the year one thousand by the Pisans, who fortified the village with walls. The Castle then served as a watchtower called the Pisana Tower.<\/p>

Thanks to the quality of the sea and beaches, as well as the care for the environment and facilities, Castiglione is considered an exclusive tourist destination. Since the year 2000, it has been awarded the 5 sails of Legambiente for 8 consecutive years, ranking as the top seaside resort for environmental and tourist quality in Legambiente and Touring Club's annual rankings.<\/p>

The town of Castiglione della Pescaia is home to a tourist port that offers daily excursions to the islands of the Tuscan Archipelago: Elba Island, Giglio Island, and the islands of Giannutri, Pianosa, Capraia, Gorgona, and Montecristo. Each island represents a gem of the Tuscan Archipelago, with its own history and offering tourists wonderful beaches and coves with white sand and crystal-clear water.<\/p>

Near Castiglione, you can also visit the Casa Rossa Ximenes and its multimedia museum. The Fabbrica delle Cateratte, also known as Casa Rossa, is a structure designed and built by the Jesuit engineer Leonardo Ximenes in 1765-68. It was intended to be the main tool for the reclamation of the Castiglione marshland, as by keeping the salty waters separate from the fresh waters, according to Ximenes, it would prevent the formation of miasma, which, according to the beliefs of the time, caused malaria.<\/p>

A few kilometers from Castiglione, you can spend a day at the fascinating Cala Violina beach. The cove is nestled between two promontories and is characterized by white sand and crystal-clear water. What makes it unique is the sounds emitted when the beach is stepped on, in the absence of significant sound sources; this effect is noticeable during the low season, given the large crowds on weekends and during the summer season. However, this should not discourage tourists, as the location allows for hours of sunbathing even in the winter months.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Terme di Saturnia.<\/strong>\u00a0Free outdoor thermal baths from which sulphurous water flows at a temperature of 37\u00b0C, particularly pleasant and beneficial.<\/p>
